Maldives Immigration goes fully digital with e-visa rollout

Maldives Immigration has officially transitioned to a fully digital visa system, with e-visas now being issued for all foreign nationals.
The new system, launched on November 10 and effective from this Sunday onwards, eliminates the need for physical passport stamps.
Under the new rules, all visa applications, including renewals, must be submitted online. For work visas, applicants must visit the Immigration website, select “Work Visa” from the dropdown menu, and enter either the work permit number or the passport number of the foreign national. Once the individual’s details are retrieved, users can navigate to the “Visa” tab, upload the required documents, and submit the application.
Employers are required to apply for a work visa within 15 days of a foreign worker’s arrival, in accordance with the Entry Pass issued by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. Foreign workers cannot leave the Maldives without a valid e-visa.

For non-work visas, applications must be submitted through the Imuga portal, which handles long-term visas for foreign residents.
The e-visa system is part of the government’s broader “Maldives 2.0” initiative, aimed at digitizing public services. Alongside the e-visa platform, Immigration has also launched a mobile app that allows users to view visa details and download approved e-visas with QR code verification.
Previously, visa applications required in-person visits and physical passport submissions. With this shift, all visa-related services are now accessible online, streamlining the process for residents and employers across the country.
Immigration officials say future updates will expand the scope of digital services, further integrating visa management with national identity systems and employer databases.
