The deadline for submitting nominations for the “World No Tobacco Day Awards”, held to mark World No Tobacco Day, has been extended.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) stated that the award is an important initiative aimed at recognising the efforts of individuals and organisations involved in tobacco control, while encouraging continued work in this field.
The original deadline for submissions was 3 May. However, the HPA has now extended the deadline to 14:00 on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, allowing additional time for applications to be submitted.
The announcement was made in a press release issued yesterday. Speaking to PSM News, the HPA said the extension was granted to provide an opportunity for a greater number of applicants.
The agency also noted that those wishing to apply must complete the required form and submit it via email to mv.gov.hpa@tobaccofreemaldives. Further information can be obtained by contacting the HPA on 3024500.
World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on 31 May by the World Health Organization (WHO), and is also marked in the Maldives with various activities. This year’s theme is “Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction”.
Efforts to reduce tobacco use in the Maldives have been ongoing and have received international recognition. In particular, the introduction of a generational ban on tobacco has been praised by the WHO, as highlighted by Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Ismail Shafeeu.
Measures implemented in the Maldives to combat tobacco use include banning the use and sale of vapes or electronic cigarettes, as well as increasing taxes on tobacco products to strengthen control.
