Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has rejoined the Adhaalath Party.
The Minister announced his rejoining the party in a post shared on social media. In his post, the Minister confirmed that he had submitted his membership form to the party.
Minister Dr Shaheem is one of the founding members of the Adhaalath Party, and had been a member of the party for over 12 years. He previously served as the Islamic Minister during the administration of former President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik on an Adhaalath Party slot.
In a recent social media post, Dr Shaheem had declared his intention to join the party once again and contest for the party’s presidency in the internal elections scheduled for later this year.
The Minister's return to the religiously conservative party has been warmly welcomed by many of the party's scholars.
Adhaalath Party was registered in 2005. According to the Election Commission's register of political parties, the party currently has over 9,000 registered members. Although the Adhaalath Party had been very active in Maldivian politics for many years, the party has maintained a relatively low profile in recent months.
