Maldives Police Service states the explosion on board a vessel docked at AA. Maalhos lagoon was likely caused by a gas leak.
The explosion on board the vessel docked at Maalhos lagoon took place at approximately 20:45pm on Saturday night.
It resulted in serious burn injuries to two expatriates who were transferred to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where they are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Police, when questioned by Sun on Monday, said their investigation indicates the explosion was likely caused by turning on the stove, or something similar, while there was a gas leak.
“It is likely that the explosion occurred due to something like turning on the stove or due to a spark while there was a gas leak,” a Police Spokesperson said.
IGMH has not provided any further details regarding the expatriates, apart from stating that they are in critical condition.
