Deputy Attorney General Aishath Bisham bas said that the Attorney General’s (AG) Office will answer in court for the case filed by Nexbis Limited against the Maldivian State related to the Parliament.
In an interview to Sun, Bisham said that the AG Office will always answer in court for cases filed against the State, and that a State Prosecutor was present to respond to the claims at the hearing on the case filed by Nexbis in relation to the Parliament.
Bisham said that a letter had been sent to the Parliament regarding the Nexbis case, indicating that if the Parliament decides that it ‘wants to’ respond to the claims, the AG Office will grant the opportunity to the Parliament Counsel General to do so in addition to the State Prosecutor.
Sun has received a copy of the letter sent to the Parliament by the AG Office. The letter states that regarding the case filed by Nexbis, “the Attorney General has advised to inform that if the Parliament decides that the Parliament Counsel General will attend the court in addition to the State Prosecutor, this will be arranged accordingly.”
However, Parliament Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim said in an interview to Sun today that Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor had said that the Parliament should attend court in relation to this case.
“The summon chit was sent to the State, to the Attorney General, and then the Attorney General has said that we should attend court. Meaning, on behalf of the Attorney General,” Nazim said.
A letter sent by the Parliament to Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz today states that according to the privileges accorded in the constitution, the only court that the Parliament will have to be accountable to is to the Supreme Court in cases regarding constitutional issues.
