As part of the Women’s Day celebrations for 2019, female staff of national bank, Bank of Maldives and the women of Gemanafushi island have gone fishing.
While BML held the fishing initiative in cooperation with Maldives Fishermen’s Association, the women who participated amount to 30 and they had caught 300kgs of fish.
The national bank revealed that the women had used traditional fishing methods to catch the fish, under two hours.
The women ventured out on the pole and line fishing trip on Friday, and the event focused on empowering women to get involved in social activities, as well as to promote equal rights for women in the society, the bank revealed.
Due to the initiative, the bank believes the traditional fishing spirit which has been in Maldivian bloodline for many centuries, has been stirred within the women on the country, It also stated that the initiative proves that women are capable of anything they put their minds to.
Bank’s Deputy CEO Aishath Nooraddeen stated that the initiative has brought the eagerness women have for fishing into the spotlight and has drawn immense local support.
