The resort on Sh. Varagu, formerly known as Viceroy Maldives, is set to be reopened as JW Marriott Resort & Spa in July this year.
The rebranded resort will have 68 water villas and is to be part of the JW Marriott brand, which is part of Marriott International, one of the largest hotel chains in the world.
The General Manager of the Resort, Mr Mark Gussing stated that each villa will have a private pool and that the resort will have a treetop restaurant, an expensive wine cellar, a kids’ club, and diverse marine life in the surrounding area.
The island is 192km away from the capital city of Malé and can be reached within 55 minutes by seaplane.
Marriott International had previously announced plans to develop a resort in Sh. Gaakoshibee, which was previously being developed by ADK Travels. The resort would have been a part of the Marriott International brand, Renaissance. However, the resort was purchased by a Singaporean company, which developed and opened it under the name, Sirru Fenfushi.
Marriott International previously worked with Starwood Hotels to establish three resorts in the Maldives before they merged in 2016.
