Former Minister of Islamic Affairs and the current chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has resigned from the religiously conservative Adhaalath Party.
According to sources, Shaheem requested to resign from the party on February 14. As per the request, Adhaalath is now seeking to remove Shaheem’s name from the party register at the Elections Commission.
Shaheem posted on his Facebook that he decided to resign after a year of disagreements with the opposition party.
He added that despite his resignation, nothing will hinder his service to the Islamic culture of the country, adding that he does not harbour any hard feelings towards any of the leadership members of Adhaalath Party.
Shaheem has not taken part in any of the anti-governmental protests or rallies of opposition parties.
He was appointed as the Islamic Minister during Former President Mohamed Waheed’s tenure and remained as the first Islamic Minister of President Yameen’s cabinet as well. After his resignation in 2015, he was appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Islamic University.
