Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s policy committee chairman Hussain Amru has said that Jumhooree Party (JP) cannot progress by making agreements with other parties nearing the presidential election as it had done before.
Speaking on RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee programme on Thursday night, Amru noted that JP’s agreements with other parties made in the past 10 years have failed.
Speaking on the show, Amru said there were some contradictions in JP and MDP’s manifestos but most were similar. Highlighting one of the differences, Amru said that JP has proposed that the government be lead by a coalition of parties through a council with the leaders of the coalition. Amru said that the Constitution and laws do not allow for such a rule.
He said that such policies can only be enforced in a parliamentary system in which coalition parties have to stay together. Amru said that coalition parties cannot work together in such a way without making changes to the current laws, highlighting the fact that JP’s agreements with other parties in 2008 and 2013 had failed ‘within a few days.’
Due to these failings, JP’s proposal can only be achieved by making legal changes and making legal agreements with other parties within the parliament.
