Elections Commission stated Sunday that voters of upcoming Local Council Elections scheduled for April 8 do not have to re-register if their voting venue has not been changed.
The election was postponed to April following a Civil Court’s order to delay the election, originally scheduled for January 14, by two months.
Noting that arrangements are underway to make the voting procedures more convenient for voters, an official of EC said that re-registration opportunity will only be given to voters who have changed their voting venues.
According to the official, a re-registration has not been yet announced. All administrative work of the election is arranged in the Elections Center established in old Jamaaludheen School building in capital Male.
Applications to run for the elections are still open, while 653 candidates have already applied to take part in this election.
The Civil Court delayed the Local Council Elections after the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) filed a case seeking to postpone the elections, saying that it was unable to prepare for the elections in time due to internal political conflicts. The lower court had ruled in favour of PPM, stating it is a situation of necessity.
The court’s verdict had incited heavy criticism from political parties.
