Thilafushi Corporation’s former Managing Director Ibrahim Riyaz (Ma. Mazaage) who had been sentenced for a jail term of 3 years، has his appeal case cancelled from today’s schedule.
Criminal Court had ruled in October، 2014 to sentence Mr. Riyaz to jail over the offense of using power of his designation at Thilafushi Corporation to grant a land reclamation project for $21 million to Heavy Load Maldives owned by MP Reeko Moosa Manik.
The appeal hearing which had been scheduled for 10:15hrs had been cancelled untimely، however the reason for the cancellation had not been disclosed.
Most of the hearings of the case had been concluded، and currently the verdict delivery remains from the case.
According to Criminal Court، Mr. Riyaz had been alleged to be guilty of corruption and fraudulent activities – he had granted Heavy Load the project using the administrative powers، however he had stated the decision was made through Thilafushi Corporation’s board.
But Mr. Riyaz had not been successful in presenting a proper evidence backing his claim. Criminal Court had also found out that a mobilization payment of MVR 38.6 million had been settled to Heavy Load for the project.
