Maldives to become global exemplar for green development, says President Muizzu

The Maldives will establish itself as a global exemplar in environmental conservation by executing projects that seamlessly intertwine development with the environment, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced during ‘The Pulse’, a programme broadcast by the President’s Office focusing on public issues.
Outlining milestones for the coming two years, the administration intends to establish modern waste management facilities across all inhabited islands, secure coastal protection for every shore, finalise a massive greening initiative, and meet a 33 per cent renewable energy threshold, President Muizzu stated.
The necessity of land reclamation projects, an issue generating considerable public debate, remains an absolute prerequisite for infrastructure, President Muizzu observed. "As I have previously stated, land reclamation is a necessary undertaking implemented to advance our developmental projects,” he stated, adding that environmental preservation must proceed in tandem. "For instance, while undertaking the reclamation of Rasmalé, we are concurrently executing coral propagation and transplantation programmes in other locations; ultimately, our objective is to execute these initiatives in a manner where infrastructure development and environmental sustainability become seamlessly interconnected," he said.
Addressing consequences on primary industries, President Muizzu indicated that the administration is prioritising restorative programmes to ensure vital bait fishing resources are not permanently lost to land reclamation. "I emphasise environmental conservation because this administration approaches it through a holistic framework designed to practically deliver tangible results,” he asserted, noting past efforts were isolated. Reaffirming these commitments to waste management and coastal protection, President Muizzu declared these strategic efforts would ensure both elements advance simultaneously.
