President inspects progress on Male’ north side road development project

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inspected the progress of the Male’ north side road development project, intended to upgrade the road to modern standards.
The road development project is carried out by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu personally inspected the ongoing physical works of this project today. Accompanying the President were the Minister of Housing, Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, senior government officials, and high-ranking representatives from MTCC.
During the site visit, the President was briefed by relevant authorities regarding the current progress and technical details of the road construction.
As Phase II of the road development nears completion, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his commitment during a recent community meeting with residents from the Henveyru ward, stating that the redevelopment of the high-traffic market area would be finalised before the beginning of Ramadan. Upon completion, this section of the road is designed to accommodate two-way traffic flow.
"The government has commenced road development projects that were not included in foreign funded initiatives. Male’ city's commercial district is significantly congested. Consequently, efforts are underway to expand these roads into two-lane dual carriageways to alleviate traffic. Our objective is to complete the busiest segment of the market area, stretching from the MPL area to the Izzudheen Jetty prior to the commencement of Ramadan," the President stated.
According to MTCC, the subbase work for the road has already begun, with the laying of the aggregate base course (ABC) and asphalt paving scheduled to start within this week. Furthermore, the installation of streetlights and road markings is also expected to proceed during the ongoing week.
MTCC further highlighted that several key components of the project have already been completed, including land reclamation, sheet piling, and panel installation. Additionally, the installation of cable junctions and the laying of main water and sewerage pipelines have been fully finalized. The corporation expressed confidence that the road development in the market area will be concluded before the start of Ramadan.
The construction covers a 250-metre section from the Local Market area to the North Harbour, forming part of a wider 1,088-metre stretch running from the Henveyru Ferry Terminal to the North Harbour. MTCC believes that upon completion, the traffic in the area would be significantly alleviated and would also resolve the flooding issues that has persisted previously.
