Sea-to-air cargo service exports 329 tonnes to 20 countries in December

A total of 329 tonnes of goods were exported through the sea-to-air cargo service last December, according to monthly statistics released by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
The shipments, equivalent to 66 TEUs, were transported to 20 countries via 10 international airlines, including Virgin Atlantic, Qatar Airways, SWISS, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines.
The sea-to-air cargo service was launched in 2024 by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to enable fast and secure delivery of goods brought in by sea through MPL. The service is jointly operated by MACL and MPL, expanding the cargo capabilities of Velana International Airport (VIA).

MACL states that VIA’s growing role in global cargo connectivity will further enhance the company’s contribution to the national economy. The cargo terminal, also opened in 2024, was developed to support a wide range of international-standard services.
