A young man was arrested from Male’ City on Monday after trying to skip out on the bill after eating from a café - in what his family reports is not his first done-and-dash attempt.
The 23-year-old man from ADh. Maamigili was brought before the Criminal Court for his remand hearing on Tuesday.
The man admitted at court that he ate from a café in Male’. But he said that he called his brother to pay the bill and that he made the payment.
He also claimed that his brother’s phone was switched off when he attempted to call him again later.
However, the investigator told the court that the made did not pay the bill as he claimed.
The investigator told the court that according to the suspect’s family, it is not the first time he has committed such a crime. The family said that he has repeatedly skipped out of bills after eating from cafes and restaurants.
The court found there was sufficient evidence to warrant the suspicion against him, and ordered for him to be remanded in a custodial jail for 10 days.
Court documents show the suspect has a history of prior arrests and detentions.
He waived his right to an attorney.
