Pres Waheed must be probed for "coup" and punished, insists Nasheed

Nasheed stepped down under controversial circumstances after weeks of opposition protests followed by a police mutiny in February last year. Since stepping down, however, Nasheed has maintained that he was ousted in a ‘coup d etat’ orchestrated by the opposition and backed by his then vice president Waheed, who succeeded him. During a ‘questions and answers’ session with Haveeru on Wednesday, Nasheed, however insisted that he would not seek retribution, if he regains power. However, highlighting that a lot of people had concerns with the power transfer, Nasheed pledged to strengthen the justice system and bring the perpetrators to justice. “Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has clearly committed treason. He should be punished accordingly. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik will be duly investigated under the laws,” Nasheed stressed. According to Nasheed, both the parliament and the judiciary must decide on keeping Waheed in power till November 11 after Saturday’s election. “I believe the parliament and the judiciary need to take that decision. It must be made clear what the Maldivian people want. A minute spent on allowing a sinful government to be in power, causes major harm to the nation,” Nasheed. “The best way is for Waheed to leave office before November 11.” The former president further said the part played by elements of the security forces in the “coup” must also be investigated and pointed out that it was the responsibility of the prosecutor general. Pointing out the issues within the judiciary, Nasheed stressed on the importance of strengthening and reforming the judicial service commission (JSC). He reiterated confidence in winning the election in the first round by dismissing questions related to the possibility of a runoff.
