JP, MDP demand Nasheed’s immediate release

In a joint statement released after an emergency JP-MDP Inter-party Commission meeting, officials called President Nasheed’s arrest “unacceptable.” “Terrorism allegations and arrest of the former Maldivian president, MDP leader President Mohamed Nasheed is unacceptable to JP and MDP. We believe terrorism allegations to be political charges. And we believe this to be an attempt to scare and terrorise political rivals. The two parties call for President Nasheed’s immediate release,” said JP Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim, reading out the statement to media. After reading out the statement, Ameen Ibrahim said he believed the people were with them in JP and MDP’s efforts to “protect Constitution and laws.” “Everyone will accept our work together to be for betterment of Maldivian people, for the future of Maldivian people,” he said. Arrested Sunday afternoon on terrorism charges related to detention of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed during his administration three years ago, his last words before taking to Dhoonidhoo Prison was for everyone to “save the country from terrorising and arresting politicians.” JP and MDP members have gathered on Chandhanee Magu calling out for his release. Prosecutors had retracted previous charge of “arresting an innocent man” last Monday, and raised terrorism charges against President Nasheed which could land him a 10 to 15 year prison sentence.
