Over 11,000 members currently signed on with the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) wish to move to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former president Mohamed Nasheed has said.
Nasheed, MDP’s founder, said this at a meeting on Thursday between leaders of the coalition government, adding that the party’s member count has drastically increased since its candidate won September’s presidential elections.
Nasheed further said that the party has also grown significantly due to new members signing on ahead of MDP’s primary election, scheduled for January.
The former president also said that the party holding a primary election, while most others in the Maldives do not, is a point of pride for him.
280 individuals are competing for party tickets in MDP’s primary. The parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 9th, 2019.
