I will ask MDP to disrupt and upset the government: Nasheed
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that he would request his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to take actions that would upset and paralyze the government of Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. MDP official website reports that Nasheed made the statement while speaking to MDP activists and members at the Victory Square this morning. Nasheed is reported to have said that “Amnesty International and other international organizations are closely watching the oppression of this government against the people of the Maldives, and I would request MDP to determine a date on which large-scale actions would be taken to paralyze and disrupt the government”. A crowd of MDP members gathered near the Maldives Police Services Headquarters, demanding to be arrested, and after advising them to leave the area a number of times, the Police used water cannons to disperse them. Some were arrested for penetrate the police cordon. Referring to the incident, Nasheed said that “some women were also arrested, and we are planning to conduct some programs to mark the International Women’s Day”. Nasheed repeated his party’s claim that the current government of the Maldives is a rebel government, and said that much needed to be done to paralyze and kill it. He said that in the USA, 40,000 people had signed a petition to support democratic activism in the Maldives, and similar initiatives were being taken in countries such as the UK and Germany. He called on the whole world to participate in the “democratic gatherings of MDP”. Nasheed said that the current Police Commissioner Abdullah Riyaz was one of the overseers of the investigations that followed the death of Ivan Nasheem at Maafushi Jail, and that he was involved in “torture inside jail”. Nasheed also claimed that “Riyaz is involved in a number of inappropriate trading practices, such as sale of oil, building boats”.
