'Grand' Male-Hulhule bridge will be like no other, Maldives minister says
According to the minister, the suggestions made by the government have been incorporated into the final design. The government has also been given a 3D, animated drawing of the bridge by the Chinese, Muizzu told Haveeru. Government has planned a grand event to unveil the bridge design. "It [design] has the changes the government wanted. I think there won't be a bridge like this anywhere else in the world," the impressed minister stressed. "As I'm from this field, I have seen a lot of such bridges. So out of all those, I'm extremely happy with this one. I truly believe that this the best we can do when considering the restrictions we face. Bridge is really grand," Muizzu who studied civil engineering said. The bridge is to be built from the Tsunami Monument to the southern end of the airport’s runway. "From all the surveys we saw really large air-pockets beneath the surface of the sea. The depth varies at different areas. The current is also really strong. So the survey showed a lot of such challenges," minister said explaining the difficult task at hand. He added that both the governments were ready to commence the project and expects it to start by the end of December. Chinese government had decided to offer assistance to Maldives to construct and also operate the bridge. Beijing would also provide one third of construction cost as free aid. The project is estimated to be around USD300 million.
