Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction of the divided ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) stated that the Elections Commission did not give a document declaring Maumoon’s official position as the leader of PPM to be presented to court over an ongoing court case.
While speaking to Mihaaru, the deputy leader of PPM appointed by Maumoon’s faction said they have tried to get the document through letters, contacting them via mobile and later going to the Elections Commission themselves to find a solution to the matter. She added that with their response, there is no hope of receiving such a document any time soon.
“They [Elections Commission] will be holding a members meeting and will be request legal advice, and if that is not enough, they might have to seek advice from the Attorney General,” was the answer given by the EC, said an official from Maumoon’s faction.
“We are just requesting a copy of a document from them. They [EC] used to give such documents on the requests of courts on different occasions.”
The courts never requested such a document while the control of PPM was being handed over to its adviser. the incumbent President Abdul Yameen Abdul Gayoom from Maumoon.
