At ITB Berlin 2026, the Maldives distinguished itself not only through the aesthetic appeal of its pavilion or the vibrancy of its displays, but through a more compelling measure: the voices of the global travelling public. As industry professionals and tourists gathered in the German capital, the mention of the island nation consistently drew admiration that extended well beyond the exhibition floor.
Aishath Shaan Shakir, the Maldivian Ambassador to Germany, observed that the nation’s reputation often precedes any formal introduction. “Whether I am visiting a physician or attending a public engagement, the moment I identify myself as Maldivian, the response is almost universal: ‘I have been to the Maldives,’” Ambassador Shakir said. “They speak of it as an exceptionally exquisite and enchanting destination. I recently encountered an individual who has visited the Maldives forty-five times and informed me of plans to return this coming April.”
That sense of recognition was echoed throughout the event, woven into conversations over coffee and in the corridors of the exhibition hall. The Maldivian pavilion became a stage for these recollections, where the narrative of the “Sunny side of life…” was voiced by travellers themselves.
“The Maldives, honestly, what praise could possibly be withheld?” said one German citizen in an interview with PSM News. “I have visited once, and the resort was spectacular; the quality of the sand and the sea truly left me breathless. I am already arranging a return trip, and I have told my husband that we must celebrate our anniversary there this year.”
The affection was not confined to German visitors. Despite differing levels of English fluency, international attendees expressed equal enthusiasm. A visitor from Poland noted the restorative nature of the destination, noting, “The Maldives is a place I dearly love. It is a destination where one can truly find relaxation. On days when I seek activity, I engage in water sports or similar recreations. One never encounters boredom there; the experience is defined by the profound desire to return.”
For seasoned travellers, the Maldives offered something more: a rare blend of natural beauty and genuine warmth. A German national who has visited sixty-three countries remarked that the islands remain unmatched. “I have travelled extensively, yet I have never encountered a place as wonderful as the Maldives. The beaches are magnificent, and the people possess a remarkable kindness. The local staff at the resort where I stayed were so warm and welcoming, always greeting me, they made me feel as though we were lifelong acquaintances.”
Taken together, the consensus at this year’s ITB Berlin underscores a singular reality: the Maldives has secured a pre-eminent position as a global destination. It endures as a sanctuary for those seeking a perpetual holiday, affirming its reputation as a terrestrial paradise.
