The long-anticipated road construction project in Hoadedhdhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll has officially commenced.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef presided over the inauguration, marking a significant milestone in the island’s infrastructure development. The project, awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC), aims to modernise the island’s transportation network through the tarring of major roads, installation of a comprehensive drainage system, and the addition of street lighting.
Minister of State Minister for Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Ismail Hameed, MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed, Madaveli MP Mohamed Shameez, Hoadedhdhoo Council President Hussain Warish, council members, and representatives from the Women’s Development Committee were among those present at the inauguration ceremony.
MTCC emphasised that the project is not only a physical upgrade but a vital driver of social and economic advancement, improving accessibility, safety, and resilience against weather-related challenges.
This development is part of a wider government effort to bring modern infrastructure to islands across the Maldives while respecting local preferences—with no island being forced to pave its roads, especially where sand paths support local tourism. Instead, the government will provide tailored solutions such as flood management vehicles and road maintenance tools based on community needs.
