MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) has stated that even the Government does believe that there were no circumstances that barred former President Nasheed from taking part in the negotiations between the State and the opposition.
He made the statement speaking in the press conference held by National Movement in AP Office yesterday.
Ibu stated that Government had allowed Nasheed to take part in negotiations with other nations and such should be allowed to take part in internal dialogues as well. He repeatedly stated that no negotiations shall take place with the Government without President Nasheed.
“Nasheed had met with representatives from UN, Commonwealth with the assistance of the Government, while he was in detention. Therefore, we see no reason that he cannot take part in an internal dialogue,”Ibu said.
Ibu added that MDP was ready for negotiations and that the Party had shared a framework with AP for the negotiations. He stated that both parties were aligned for gist of the negotiations.
The Government had stated that no negotiations can be held with MDP President Mohamed Nasheed and AP President Sheikh Imran as they both are in detention.
AP SG Iyad Hameed stated that the Party was prepared for negotiations. However, he stated that they cannot accept the reasons given by the Government not to engage Sheikh Imran in the negotiations. As such, Iyad stated that there were no legal ramifications in holding negotiation with Imran and called the Government’s decision “a sign of insincerity”.
Ibu had urged for the necessity of multi-party joint negotiations instead of the Government prescribed single Party negotiations. He added that both MDP and AP had called for this measure. He added that even though President’s Office issued separate invitations, the agenda was the same.
President Yameen yesterday stated that the negotiations with MDP and AP were stalled due to the inaction of the two parties.
