President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Maldives' sovereignty, stating that he will not allow anything that could "cause even the slightest disturbance" to the nation’s independence.
While delivering presidential address at the inaugural parliamentary session of the year, President Muizzu emphasized his promise to the Maldivian people, which he first made upon assuming office. “It is my determination not to allow anything that could cause even the slightest disturbance to this beloved nation's independence. This is a national duty that I impose upon myself, one that I will never neglect,” he declared.
In line with this commitment, President Muizzu outlined several key defense initiatives aimed at strengthening the Maldives’ ability to protect itself independently by land, sea, and air. These include:
Enhancing Coast Guard Capabilities: The government has begun work to double the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard service. Procurement of additional vessels is underway, and new Coast Guard centers are being established. A specialized 'Special Boat Squadron' has also been deployed to enhance operations.
Expanding the Marine Corps: Efforts are being made to significantly boost the MNDF Marine Corps’ capacity, ensuring a stronger defense force.
Strengthening Fire and Rescue Services: This year, additional resources and infrastructure improvements are planned for MNDF’s Fire and Rescue operations.
President Muizzu's commitment to national sovereignty has been a central theme of his administration. Since taking office, his government has overseen the removal of Indian military personnel from Maldivian soil—an issue that had been a major point of contention under the previous administration.
Additionally, constitutional amendments have been enacted to ensure that no foreign personnel can be stationed in the Maldives without approval from the People’s Majlis (Parliament), reinforcing national control over foreign military presence.
With these strategic developments, the Muizzu administration aims to fortify the country’s self-reliance in defense while upholding the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty as a top priority.
