Japanese envoy pledges long-term support for Maldivian sports development

Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, has identified the intersection of athletics and diplomacy as a critical bridge between cultures and a powerful force for fostering sustained global peace.
This vision for international cooperation formed the basis of a ceremony held in Hulhumalé Phase II, where Ambassador Ishigami reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to the Maldivian sports sector through the donation of athletic equipment, including handballs used during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The allocation of this legacy equipment, provided under the Sports Diplomacy Enhancement Project, was described by Ambassador Ishigami as a profound symbol of the historically close partnership between the two nations. She expressed confidence that the equipment would serve as a vital catalyst, inspiring young Maldivian athletes towards future success.
The ambassador emphasised that athletics possess an extraordinary capacity to unite communities while imparting essential life lessons such as discipline, mutual respect and teamwork. These values, she noted, are key to strengthening the civic bonds between the people of Japan and the Maldives.
Japan’s support is expected to remain steadfast across various sporting disciplines as both nations look ahead to the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026. Highlighting the upcoming competition in Nagoya, Ambassador Ishigami extended her best wishes to the Maldivian national handball team for their participation later this year.
The event concluded with an exhibition match between the Maldives’ Under-18 and Under-20 national teams, attended by a number of senior government officials and sports administrators.
