Airspace Surveillance Intensifies as President Muizzu Authorises First Military Air Station in Defence Overhaul

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a presidential decree authorising the establishment and operationalisation of the Maldives National Defence Force’s (MNDF) first Air Corps station, marking a significant milestone in the country’s evolving defence strategy.
The decree instructs the MNDF Air Corps to activate the station to support aerial surveillance, monitor the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and execute operational mandates. It also requires the implementation of uninterrupted, 24-hour airspace monitoring, reinforcing the Air Corps’ role in safeguarding national security and territorial integrity.
This directive aligns with President Muizzu’s broader agenda to modernise the country’s military capabilities. Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon described the initiative as a long-overdue response to persistent calls for a more robust national defence.
At the Victory Day ceremony, held to commemorate the military’s successful defence against an armed incursion 37 years ago, Minister Ghassan credited the president’s direct involvement for the renewed momentum behind these reforms. He characterised the president’s approach as drawing a “thick red line” around the protection of the Maldives’ independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The transformation of the MNDF, he added, is guided by a long-term strategic policy, with the president actively engaged “day and night” in its implementation.
Among the most visible outcomes is the launch of the National Service programme, first announced by President Muizzu during last year’s Victory Day observance. Students enrolled in the programme took part in this year’s ceremony, reflecting its aim to cultivate a generation loyal to the nation.
Minister Ghassan also pointed to progress within specific branches of the military. He noted that efforts to enhance the operational capacity of the MNDF Marine Corps are advancing steadily, while initiatives to double the capability of the Coast Guard are also underway.
He concluded by urging the nation to take pride in the military’s recent accomplishments, describing this year’s Victory Day as a testament to the renewed strength and strategic direction of the Maldivian armed forces.
