Resolve of all opposition leaders vital for judicial reform, says former AG

The one thing that is required in the work to reform judiciary is the resolve of all opposition leaders, says former Attorney General and prominent lawyer Husnu Al Suood.
In a tweet posted on Saturday, the former AG noted that reforming judiciary is achievable and that “it is something that the people want to see”.
According to the lawyer, the resolve of all four opposition leaders- Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s former President Mohamed Nasheed, Adhaalath Party (AP)'s Sheikh Imran Abdulla, Jumhooree Party (JP)'s Qasim Ibrahim as well as Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM)'s former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom- is vital to reform the judiciary.
Suood’s tweet comes at a time ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) aligned members of Parliament have backed claims that convictions from Maldives courts are not justified. As such, ruling party aligned members had at Parliament sittings held for the last session for 2018, claimed that many individuals have been subject to unfair prosecution and that justice needs to be served for them.
It is notable that serving justice is one of the highest prioritized pledges in the opposition’s manifesto which was publicized during their campaign for the Presidential Election in September. Moreover, Solih had during the campaign, vowed to reform judiciary during his five-year term, which is to begin on the 17th of November after he is sworn in as Maldives next President.
