MDP has said that the fact that President Nasheed is serving a prison sentence is not a reason that he can’t take part in the discussions and Nasheed was not sentenced to carry out his sentence in solitude.
The President’s Office has sent a letter to MDP saying that President Nasheed cannot take part in the discussions with the government since he is serving a prison sentence.
In the response, the letter to President Yamin from MDP said that allowing an emissary from the U.N and the Common Wealth to meet with President Nasheed proves that there are no restrictions to meet him.
After President Yamin expressed that he wants to hold discussions with the opposition, MDP congress has passed a resolution saying that representing the party in government discussions would be the President of the Party, Ali Waheed, Leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group, Ibrahim Mohamed Soalih (Ibu) and the former president Mohamed Nasheed.
