The Bank of Maldives (BML) has warned that foreign transaction limits on debit cards may be revoked for individuals found to be misusing the service.
The bank said it increased the limit for using Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) accounts' debit cards abroad from November 11, to better meet customers’ essential needs. The change sets a monthly limit of USD 1,000 for transactions conducted via card machines outside the Maldives, and USD 3,000 per month for payments related to tickets, hotel bookings, and medical treatment.
However, BML said it has observed instances of misuse, including cases where personal debit cards were given to third parties for use abroad. In one case, an individual from a household reportedly took over 100 cards to a foreign country and conducted transactions using a specific merchant’s card machine to obtain foreign currency. Misuse also includes using limits designated for travel-related expenses by individuals not traveling abroad.
The bank stressed that such practices violate the agreement between cardholders and the bank, and go against standard financial transaction principles.

“The limit set for foreign transactions on personal cards is intended solely for the cardholder’s own necessary expenses,” BML said. “The Bank will be reviewing these transactions and referring them to relevant authorities. We may also take measures such as revoking foreign usage limits and blocking transactions at merchants found to be facilitating abuse.”
BML said it increased the amount of foreign currency available for purchase through debit card usage abroad with the aim of providing the easiest and most convenient solutions for essential and other needs when customers travel overseas for various purposes. Therefore, the sustainable provision of this service depends on stopping the misuse of cards, the bank said.
To ensure account security, regulatory compliance, and the continued availability of overseas card services, BML urged customers not to give their personal cards to others for use abroad.
