Progress on first sustainable township Project Ayla advances rapidly

The development of Project Ayla, the inaugural sustainable township in the Maldives, is advancing at a rapid pace following the conclusion of all land reclamation and design phases, according to a recent statement by Invest Maldives. The milestone marks a significant shift in the nation’s infrastructure planning, clearing the way for the commencement of building construction and foundational utilities.
The extensive reclamation efforts, which began in April 2024, were successfully finalised by February 2025. The operation utilised approximately six million cubic metres of sand to create the new landmass, with comprehensive coastal protection measures, including the installation of revetment walls, now fully completed to secure the shorelines. By the close of 2025, all requisite administrative permits and investment agreements were finalised alongside a master plan executed with international experts.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officially inaugurated the project in January, signalling a phase that encompasses essential amenities for a staff village and foundational roadways. Guided by international consultants, landscaping and preparations for permanent edifices are advancing, Invest Maldives said. The initiative integrates renewable energy and smart technology to create a self-sustaining urban centre.
The blueprint features luxury residential villas, an ultra-luxury resort, a marina, and the Global School of Hospitality and Leadership. To address national food security, a 17-hectare zone is dedicated to an integrated agriculture and fisheries system. Engineered to generate at least 60 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, the government aims to bring the city into full operation by the end of 2028.
