BML denies blocking e-commerce platforms, clarifies transaction limits

Bank of Maldives (BML) has refuted social media claims alleging it blocked international e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and AliExpress.
In an official statement, the bank dismissed rumours that card transactions on these sites were being restricted, clarifying that purchases remain uninterrupted within specified limits.
BML released transaction data to counter the speculation, revealing that 58,000 successful transactions worth USD 2.33 million were processed through Amazon and AliExpress since January this year. However, the bank noted that declined transactions likely occurred when customers exceeded monthly spending caps.
The surge in Maldivians using personal debit and credit cards for business-related purchases prompted BML to remind customers of its dedicated business banking solutions. These services support higher transaction volumes and provide necessary documentation for commercial imports.
Over the past few years, BML has facilitated growing international financial activity, with 66 percent of foreign transactions occurring on e-commerce platforms. The bank reported record overseas spending—USD 311 million (2023), USD 389 million (2024), and USD 524 million (2025), with USD 59 million processed in January 2026 alone.
To accommodate customer needs, BML has also increased credit card overseas limits starting 1 February. Debit cards remain capped at USD 3,000 monthly for travel/medical expenses and USD 1,000 for point-of-sale transactions abroad. The bank reassured users of continued access to foreign currencies for flights, hotels, and healthcare.
BML emphasised its commitment to seamless digital commerce while urging business owners to utilise tailored banking services for large-scale transactions.
