President says RTL ferry network to cover all atolls by August

The Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry service is expected to be expanded nationwide by the end of August, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.
Speaking at the weekly press conference, the President said the government is continuing the rollout of the service according to its planned schedule, describing RTL as a key priority for improving national connectivity.
The RTL network, which was launched in 2022, is currently operational in 15 atolls, connecting 145 islands. The most recent expansion saw services introduced in Laamu Atoll last month.
The President noted that only a few atolls remain without coverage, including Meemu Atoll and Zone 3, which comprises Kaafu, Alif Alif, Alif Dhaal and Vaavu atolls. He acknowledged that delays in payments to contractors had affected the pace of implementation.
“If payments were made on time, this would have been completed sooner. Based on current progress, we expect to cover all remaining atolls by July or August at the latest. We are also working to acquire additional vessels for atolls where services have already commenced,” he said.
The government has said the nationwide rollout of RTL is aimed at strengthening inter-island transport, improving accessibility and supporting economic activity across the Maldives.
