Former President and former Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently not active in politics, met with King Charles of the United Kingdom yesterday.
In a post on X, Nasheed expressed his honor at being granted an audience with the British monarch.
I was honoured to be granted an audience yesterday with His Majesty King Charles III. I believe His Majesty and @TheCVF share many concerns, including the need to unlock private capital for environmental and clean energy projects in developing countries. pic.twitter.com/Pf6qxxB8cz— Mohamed Nasheed (@MohamedNasheed) March 28, 2024
A number of concerns, including the need to unlock private capital for environmental and clean energy projects in developing countries, were shared during the meeting, Nasheed said.
The former President, one of the most renowned figures in the Maldives political sphere, has temporarily relocated to Ghana. Nasheed arrived in Ghana to assume the position of Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF). He met King Charles in the same capacity.
Ghana currently chairs the CVF for the period 2022-2024.
Nasheed's decision to temporarily step away from Maldivian politics came after the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, offered him the position at the CVF. Nasheed attended the CVF conference after resigning as Speaker of Parliament. However, he continues to serve as the MP for Machangolhi Central Constituency.
