Sea to air cargo transshipments have accelerated since its introduction with over 1,200 tonnes forwarded to all corners of the globe in the first six months of the year, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) figures showed.
The country’s main airport, Velana International Airport (VIA) operator Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) in collaboration with MPL launched Sea to Air Cargo Transshipment services in March last year, aimed at providing accessible freight transport via land, sea, and air.
This hybrid model is designed to meet the needs of businesses operating in the region and streamline transportation processes in a sustainable manner.
According to MPL, sea to air cargo services are currently connected by 10 international airlines, shipping cargo from Maldives to 15 destinations across the globe.
According to MPL's latest figures, the State-owned company carried a total of 1,222 tonnes of cargo from January to June this year. This is the amount of cargo carried by 271 TUS containers, it said.

Since its inception, MPL has looked to expand sea to air cargo services having already generated millions in foreign revenue for the island nation.
