President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has forwarded the name of Mohamed Shakeel, the current Managing Director of the Hajj Corporation, to the Parliament for appointment to the vacant member position on the Elections Commission.
The President submitted Shakeel's name to parliament following a public application process to fill the vacancy on the commission. In a letter sent to the parliament, President Muizzu recommended the appointment of Mohamed Shakeel, bearing Registry Number RS.13449, to the position.
Along with Shakeel's nomination, the President also submitted the names of all other qualified applicants who applied for membership of the Elections Commission.
Shakeel previously served as a member of the Elections Commission from 3 December 2014 to 9 May 2018. Prior to that, he served as Director General of the commission from 1 September 2013 to 3 December 2014.
The vacancy on the Elections Commission arose following the resignation of Mohamed Zahid from both his position as a commission member and as President of the commission.
The Elections Commission is comprised of five members. The current members are Vice-President Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed and members Hassan Zakariyya, Abdul Haseeb Ismail and Riffath Abdulla.
The position of President of the Elections Commission remains vacant. Under the law, the President of the commission will be appointed by the President of the Maldives, with the approval of parliament, from among the commission's members once the full membership of the body has been completed.
