Maldives pays all the money required to pay for GMR

Maldivian government has paid all the money, required to pay to GMR after the government cancelled the agreement made by MDP government with GMR.
Speaking to the press at the President’s Office Attorney General Muhammad Anil said that the money was paid with MACL’s budget and not from the state reserves or government budget.
Anil said that the arbitration court ordered to pay 250 million dollars on 25th October and the government paid a total of 271 million dollars with interest.
Anil said that the government paid 185 million dollars, which was a loan taken from Exim bank by GMR with a sovereign guarantee of Maldives and also paid 68 million dollars to GMR. He said that MACL will not face any difficulties in their daily operations even though they paid this money.
Anil said that the agreement made by Nasheed’s government with GMR was a huge loss to Maldives in every way. He said that the consultants of IFC who gave counsel in the matter to Maldives did not work in the best interest of Maldives. Anil said that even when they terminated the contract, instead earning any money from GMR, MACL was paying GMR money and that was a huge loss to MACL.
In addition, he said that the staffs who were in Nasheed’s government did not cooperate with Dr.Waheed’s government after the regime change. He said that they worked in the interest of GMR. “ It’s sad to say that even some of the important documents are not there. GMR left without handing over these documents. Except very few, no one cooperated” said Anil.
Furthermore, Anil thanked all Maldivians and foreigners who helped during the arbitrary proceedings. Anil thanked Allah for being able to pay back this money within such a short period.
