Indian police service state that they have arrested Delhi’s law minister Jitender Singh Tomar amid allegations that his law degree is fake.
Mr. Tomar who belongs to India’s Aam Admi Party (AAP) will be facing charges of forgery and cheating if he cannot prove he attended University.
While he had been held by the Indian police، and faces offense charges، Mr. Tomar claims that the allegations are “baseless”، however the university states that it has no records of Mr. Tomar’s attendance.
Meanwhile، Mr. Tomar-backed by AAP، which was elected on a pledge to fight corruption، states that his arrest was politically-motivated.
“He has been arrested without any notice or prior information. What is BJP government doing?” AAP’s leader Sanjay Singh told The Times of India.
Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told Economic Times that Aam Admi Party (AAP) was being targeted stating، “This arrest is illegal. There is an emergency-like situation. This is supposed to be a democracy… Maybe it is an attempt to teach the AAP a lesson.”
The Aam Admi Party went on to win a landslide 67 out of the 70 seats in Delhi’s council back in February’s elections. This was seen as a huge blow against Narendra’s Modi’s governing BJP party.
