Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) late Monday accused Jumhoory Party’s leader Qasim Ibrahim of illegally trying to topple the government.
After a two-hour meeting between President Abdulla Yameen and the ruling coalition’s parliamentary group, PPM’s coalition partner Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) declared that they will do everything they can to elect President Yameen for a second term in the Presidential Elections 2018.
It is unclear how many lawmakers took part in the meeting.
In a press conference without taking questions from press, PPM claimed that Qasim Ibrahim has been misusing the money he earns from his businesses.
Parliamentary group leader of PPM, Ahmed Nihan accused the opposition of planning a coup and proclaimed that they will be stopped.
Deputy leader of PPM, lawmaker of Fonadhoo constituency Abdul Raheem Abdulla, asserted that the ruling party is secure and unwavering, and that the resignation of some MPs would not hinder their work.
Moreover, the PPM-MDA coalition voiced support for the constitutional case which has been submitted to the Supreme Court by Attorney General Mohamed Anil seeking to oust lawmakers from their parliament seats should they shift parties.
Furthermore, deputy PG leader of PPM Ibrahim Falaah said that the meeting was conducted to share the concerns of the joint parliamentary group. He also said that it is not too late for the resigned MP’s of PPM to return to the ruling party.
