Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has said equipment donated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will further strengthen police services.
The NDMA and UNDP donated USD 168,612 worth of disaster and emergency equipment to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
Speaking to PSM News following the handover ceremony, Commissioner Naveen said the equipment will strengthen police response in disasters such as heavy rains and fire incidents. Noting that the equipment will be utilised in police stations across the atolls, he said distribution will commence soon.
NDMA’s Chief Executive Hisan Hassan highlighted the police’s role as first responders and said the donation will improve safety and disaster response at island level. The purpose of the donation is to mitigate the losses of disasters and ensure the safety and protection of the people, he added.
The equipment, funded by Denmark, Luxembourg and South Korea under the UNDP’s Risk Informed Development in Small Island Developing States (RID in SIDS) project, aims to reduce island vulnerability, enhance response skills, and strengthen early warning systems amid climate risks.
