Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham announced that 110 children in state care have been placed with foster families since November 2023 under the government’s “One Family for Every Child” initiative.
The Minister disclosed the progress at a press conference held at the President’s Office, emphasising the programme’s role in ensuring vulnerable children receive stable, nurturing homes.
The policy, a key priority of the administration, aims to address the developmental gaps observed in children separated from their biological families due to various circumstances. Minister Aishath Shiham highlighted the government’s commitment to safeguarding these children while fostering their social and practical skills.
“The President’s vision is clear—every child deserves a family. We urge more Maldivians to join this initiative and collaborate with our ministry to provide love and care for these children,” she stated. Additionally, the government is expanding safe environments for children, including newly established facility in Faafu Atoll.
Beyond foster care, the Ministry has introduced internship programmes to prepare older children in shelters for independent futures. This year, 23 children secured internships, while 40 received vocational training. Some have already graduated from the National Service Programme—a milestone the Ministry celebrates as a testament to its efforts.
