Speaker: No hesitation in passing bills submitted by President as they benefit the public

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, on Monday night, stated that there would be no hesitation in passing the bills submitted to Parliament by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, as they are legislations intended to benefit the public.
Speaking at a meeting held by President Muizzu with residents of Fonadhoo – the birth island of Abdul Raheem – on Monday night, the Parliament Speaker stated that lawmakers are "courageously prepared" to turn the aspirations of the citizens into reality.
He affirmed that every bill submitted to Parliament by the President is intended to benefit the nation and its citizens. Therefore, he added, there will be no hesitation in passing those bills.
“There will not be even a minuscular of hesitance for anything required from the Parliament to the run the government,” he stressed.
The ruling PNC holds a supermajority in the current 20th parliamentary session. Abdul Raheem, who also serves as the party’s chairperson, stated that the minority must adhere to decisions made with the consensus of the majority, emphasizing that this is the essence of democracy.
While MDP secured supermajority in the Parliament during its administration, the party currently holds only 12 seats in the legislative body. The party’s lawmakers have continuously expressed concerns over obstruction of matters raised by them in the Parliament.
In this regard, MDP’s South Hulhumale’ MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed has accused Abdul Raheem of obstructing opposition lawmakers from summoning cabinet ministers to the Parliament for questioning.
As such, Shamheed said MDP lawmakers will commence efforts handover presiding over parliamentary sittings to Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim.
 
Abdul Raheem’s had distanced himself from the government following the dismissal of his son, Ibrahim Faisal, who was serving as the tourism minister. During this period, Abdul Raheem has previously reported “strained” ties with President Muizzu. However, after sometime, he had resumed participation in government and ruling PNC activities.
