Minister urges Maldives FA to hasten elections

Home Minister Umar Naseer urged Wednesday for Football Association of Maldives (FAM)’s Normalisation Committee to hold the FAM elections at the earliest. Umar called upon FAM during his meeting with Sports Minister Ahmed Zuhoor, Attorney General Mohamed Anil and FAM Normalisation committee members at the sports ministry Wednesday. The home minister stressed the importance of holding FAM’s electoral congress as soon as possible, but according to the regulations as stipulated under the Associations Act. Minister Umar also asserted his confidence in all associations of the nation adhering to the framework of the law. FAM’s elections had been originally scheduled for October 22, but were postponed due to the authorities’ refusal to cooperate over withheld documents and issues with FAM’s new charter. FIFA had subsequently authorised postponing the congress and extended the mandate of the Normalisation Committee until December 31, 2015.
