President Nasheed in imminent danger of arrest: MDP
The party said that President Nasheed had been receiving numerous threats that he would be arrested as soon as he returned home from his current trip abroad. The MDP leader is currently in Abu Dhabi for Zaid Future Energy Prize awards. “We note that threats President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s government was working on arresting President Mohamed Nasheed comes at a time when President Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s government has been threatening different politicians and diluting power of Constitution,” read the statement released by MDP on Wednesday. MDP went on to say that President Nasheed was the most popular political leader and that, that and the fact that he was a former president of the country made it compulsory for State to provide him necessary protection. Government was instead threatening him and should stop it, said MDP in their statement. Though MDP have alleged that the government was on the verge of arresting the former Maldivian president, Maldivian Police Service has been silent over the matter. Meanwhile, trial on President Nasheed’s legal complaint over the legitimacy of Hulhumale’ Court in to restart on January 28, after a break of half a year.
