Nasheed pledges to generate 72 bln revenue in 5 years

During the special parade held to officially launch the manifesto based primarily on five pledges, Nasheed expressed concern by the increasing budget deficit and said the manifesto has been drafted to counter it. "I will maintain the tax system I introduced during my first term. We will continue the development work without increasing GST and business tax. The income tax proposed by the MDP government in 2010 will also be introduced," he explained. According to the opposition leader, the manifesto has been drafted in line with the law on state expenditure accountability. The MDP manifesto comprises of 137 different development projects with an estimated cost of MVR30 billion, he said. Nasheed further explained that the party's policies will create 51,000 employment opportunities, MVR120 million worth saving scheme for higher education and 20,000 housing units.
