Kill me first before killing a Maldivian, President Nasheed tells protestors

At a rally organised by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on the Maafannu Fehige road, the President expressed concerns over the death threats published on the website of the protest being organised by Adhaalath Party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and other organisations. "No Maldivian can be targeted or killed without killing me first… The government and MDP will come out in defence of the people," he said. The President stressed that the streets of Male are not new to the government and that no one can confront the government on the roads. "We'll not come out on the streets with the defence forces but with bare hands. No one can confront us on these streets," he said. President Nasheed noted that some are hampering the government because of the success in achieving its goals. The President's comments come a day after organisers of the mass protest scheduled for December 23 published slogans calling for the "killing" of "those who challenge and oppose Islam" on its promotional website. The slogans on the website include "the ruling of those who break the laws and challenge Islam is killing them by the public", "today's law is to kill anti-Islam activists… and those who support them" and "ready to kill anyone who challenge the religion of Islam without regarding his party". The religious organisations and political parties, however, later removed the death threats saying that they were published "by mistake".
