Adhaalath party has said today that it is worrying that the Indian High Commission in Maldives is aiding former president Nasheed to “hide” from justice.
In a press statement released by the party today, Adhaalath said that it is an act of cowardice by Nasheed to hide in the Indian High Commission and that while the Prosecutor General had raised charges against, his actions undermine the judicial system of the state.
“While an independent Prosecutor General had raised charges against him on behalf of the state, it is worrying that the Indian High Commission has aided Nasheed to hide from justice in such a manner that undermines the judicial system of the state. Also, making the Indian High Commission a station for MDP, while he meets with MDP supports from this place, while they haunt the streets of Male’, encourage violence, and encourage to vandalize state property, that these are actions that will diminish the respect and dignity that the Maldivian people have long held for India,” Adhaalath party press statement stated.
The statement also said at a time when the relationship between the two countries are deteriorating, it is crucial that the Indian Ambassador to the Maldives should possess the necessary capability and skill to amend the damaged relationship, and that the person must have a strong inclination to see justice prevail.
“We call upon the Indian Government to respect the internal affairs of the Maldives. Adhaalath Party does not wish to see the relationship between India and Maldives trampled as a result of the internal turmoil in the country. Adhaalath Party wishes for the close friendly relationship between the countries, based on respect and justice, to continue,” stated Adhaalath Party.
The statement also said that the continued presence of the former president Mohamed Nasheed is an act of cowardice on his behalf and that the purpose of his actions is to mock the Maldivian judicial system and to cause it to crumble, and that it is a dangerous course of action.
“Instead of working towards clearing his accusations, Nasheed is trying to upset the judicial system, discredit the security forces who maintain the peace, rebel against authority, and to take away the peace and stability in the Maldives,” said Adhaath.
The statement also stated that Nasheeds actions are causing a threat to the independence and sovereignty of the state and that the party calls upon the members of MDP, all political parties, and the general public, to not allow Nasheed the opportunity to continue this course. The party also called upon the government and state security forces to stand steadfast in protecting the constitution and laws of the state.
