Passengers stranded with strike at Bandaranaike International Airport
The row over salary escalated with protesting employees cutting off electricity to the Airport, resulting in huge relays in flight schedule. A Maldivian passenger, left stranded at INIA after the Sri Lankan Airlines flight due to depart for Lanka at 3:30 pm got delayed, said that the delay was announced after they had made the check-in, and that it had been now announced that the flight would depart at 5:00 pm. Employees protesting over low salary have brought the engine room of the International Airport under control. Lanka Daily Mirror reports that there had been difficulties in providing services to four airplanes that landed at the Airport Wednesday morning. Passengers had to wait on board for a long time to wait for the jet bridge to be connected to the airplane in order for them to be able to disembark; an airport officials report that many are left waiting at the airport for their baggage, due to baggage belts not working, with the lack of electricity. Maldivian Airports Company Limited (MACL) – the company that runs INIA- is unavailable for comment on the issue at the moment. However, officials from INIA Help Desk said that flights from Lanka to Maldives had been delayed, saying that they did not know how long the delay would take. An official from Sri Lankan Airlines said that the delay in the 3:30 pm flight had been due to a delay in the flight taking off from Colombo, and that the issue had been resolved with the plane set to land at INIA at 4:10 pm. Five flights have been scheduled to depart for Lanka Wednesday evening, with six more scheduled to depart Wednesday night.
