Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has rejected the application by former Minister of Home Affairs Abdulla Kamaluddeen to form a new political party, due to his existing membership in Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).
Vice President of ECM Ismail Habeeb revealed the application by Kamaluddeen has been rejected as he does not fulfill the conditions to lead the formation of a new party. As such, Habeeb noted an individual applying to form a new party must not be a member of an existing party.
On July 11, Kamaluddeen announced that he was forming a new political party called National Solidarity Party. He said the new party aims to work towards a solution for long-standing issues in the country which the existing political ideologies and philosophies in the Maldives have failed to resolve.
There are currently 10 political parties registered in the Maldives. However, only Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Jumhooree Party (JP) have a membership of above 10,000.
