"Nasheed’s release was not agreed" – Dr. Shainee

Although the opposition had proposed for the release of former president Mohamed Nasheed، the Government has not agreed to the term، says Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee، who took part from the government’s side in the conference of the political parties.
Speaking at the press conference held at the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon، Dr. Shainee، who is temporarily in charge of the Home Affairs، said the government did not agree to release Nasheed، or to offer clemency.
“Terms were proposed، and discussions were held in the committee on the release of Nasheed and other political detainees. However، the Government had not made any official communication with the opposition that anyone will be released or offered a pardon،” Shainee said.
Furthermore، Minister Shainee said only the President has the authority to pardon or offer clemency for a convict، and President Abdulla Yameen had not requested Correctional Services or Home Affairs to transfer Nasheed to home detention.
He said as per the constitution، a pardon or clemency would be offered once the appeal process has been completed، which was advised by the President Abdulla Yameen as well.
In addition، Dr. Shainee said the apparent transfer notice circulating on social media has a wrong format، compared to the actual document. When inquired on the stamp of the Correctional Services on the document، Minister said، “Anyone can make such stamps these days”.
